Tompkins Square Park has more than 400 trees, including three giant sycamores that date back to the 1830s and one of the densest stands of majestic American elms remaining in the city. The trees clean the air, cool the pathways, and soothe the senses. But they need a level of maintenance which, because of budget and staff cuts, the Parks Department cannot provide. The Save the Shade Fund of the East Village Parks Conservancy helps provide income to support the care of these trees for the life of the Park. |
